Astrud’s classes welcome every-BODY! She is warm, inviting, knowledgable and inclusive in her approach to Yoga. In her class you will experience devotional chanting, movement using a mindful instructional flow and you will be guided with a deep awareness of the breath and body connection.
Astrud Castillo started her devotional path 20 years ago in New York City teaching yoga and leading Kirtan at Laughing Lotus NYC. She moved to San Francisco in 2007 to open LaughingLotus SF. Astrud studied Yoga and Vedic chanting in India with T.K.V. Desikachar and his wife Menika and has been inspired by the teachings of Mark Whitwell, her teacher for over 15 years, as well as studied with Iyengar teacher Richard Rosen in the Bay Area. She has had the privilege to teach alongside her dear friend and a creative source of inspiration, Jasmine Tarkeshi, during the duration of her teaching career.
Tending to the inner environment and ecology of the heart and mind has everything to do with how we tend to our outer environment as well as how we treat others and getting behind equality and justice for all.
Committed to the practice of Bhakti Yoga, the yoga of devotion, Astrud has travelled globally studying, sharing and teaching Mantra Meditation, or Kirtan. Kirtan is the ancient art of singing the names of the Divine through call-and-response chanting. In her words, “we come together to co-elevate one-another, glorify the Divine and sing in the key of “WE!”. Through this expression of surrender the mind is freed, the heart becomes full and we experience Yoga, a feeling of unity with ourselves and everything around us, the illusion of separateness is dissolved.
Astrud has toured Europe on her own and regionally with her band, The Caravan. Astrud teaches Bhakti 101 and Harmonium workshops throughout the Bay Area, teaches teachers in training and leads annual retreats to India. She has had the honor of singing with Prema Hara, The Kirtaniyas, Radience Kirtan as well as opened for Jai Uttal. You can hear her CD “ Hari Om” on Spotify and iTunes.
